Birney Elementary School
The students at Birney Elementary are proud of their Arts teacher,
Maria Stephenson, who was recently honored with the regional “Barbie
Art Teacher of the Year Award” from Mattell Toys and the Entertainment
Industry. Mrs. Stephenson was judged not only on her teaching skills,
background and extensive summer arts program for youngsters, part
of her judging criteria came from her students. Students submit an
essay telling why their teacher should win. Four of the students at
Birney, Autumn Woolman, Anthony Grimmett, Markel Haralson and Veronica
Turner, had their essays selected out of over 4,000 that were submitted.
Their efforts not only helped Mrs. Stephenson, but won each student
a $100 prize. Mrs. Stephenson’s award was a $5,000 grant to the school
from the sponsors. She is one of 20 regional winners.
Boykin Continuing Education Center
Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick will be the keynote speaker at the 37th
Annual Recognition Ceremony for 25 students at the Nancy M. Boykin
Continuing Education Center. All of the students at Boykin are either
pregnant or have had babies and have truly put forth a great deal
of extra effort to complete their high-school education. The seniors
will officially be awarded a diploma from their high school of origin
or the Katherine Ferguson Academy.
Central High School
It is officially the oldest high school in the District, tracing
its beginnings back to two rooms in a building on Miami street in
1868. The building that is now called Detroit Central High School
is going to undergo a face lift, inside and out. The Groundbreaking
Ceremony, which was attended by many dignitaries and alumni of the
school, marked the official beginning of work at the site. The project
is expected to be completed in 2005.
